What is the Lymphatic System?
The lymphatic system is a system in our body that works closely with our circulatory system. It is made of up lymph vessels, lymph nodes and organs that aid in immunity. The purpose of the lymphatic system is to remove excess fluid, waste and proteins from between our cells, filter, break them down and then return them to the cardiovascular system. Within our digestive system, it aids in absorbing protein, fats and fat-soluble vitamins. It also plays an important role in our immune system.
What is Lymphedema
Lymphedema is an abnormal accumulation of fluid which causes chronic inflammation, fibrosis, and adipose proliferation of the affected area. It is often accompanied by skin changes and infections. Lymphedema is chronic, but can be managed through manual lymphatic drainage, proper compression, exercise, skin care and self care practices.
What is the Lipedema?
Lipedema is a medical condition mainly found in women. It involves the enlargement of both legs and sometimes arms as a result of fat deposits in the skin. The fat does not respond to regular weight-loss methods and often gets worse over time. Legs or arms involved are often painful, especially when touched, and bruise easily. There is no cure, but regular manual lymphatic drainage and compression can be beneficial.
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
Manual lymphatic drainage is a light touch modality where the therapist uses gentle strokes to manually stimulate the lymphatic system to work more efficiently. It is similar to a massage, but in this case the therapist works directly with the lymphatics rather than the musculature.
